Chapter 3

            I need some sleep.

                Yes, I need some sleep. But Kyuhyun was still wide awake on his bed, tightly shutting his eyes in efforts of sleep but he fails so easily. He was in pain. His thighs hurt from outworking himself on the beach and it was punishing him with much success. His back part hurts from falling too many times as Kangin kept bumping into him a little too hard for his body to take. Kyuhyun wondered how in the world he played till the very end without realizing all these pains until he stopped playing. Maybe I should take it easy next time.

                Kyuhyun finally gave up sleep as there was no way he could get it in this condition. He slowly got up realizing that Sungmin’s bed was empty. Oh right, I ignored him just now.

                He walked to the only source of light at the other edge of the room to see Sungmin seated cross-legged on one of the chairs. “Why aren’t you asleep?” Kyuhyun said announcing his presence; making Sungmin jump. “What are you doing here?” Sungmin said. Annoyance was obvious in his tone. “Why aren’t YOU asleep?”

                “I couldn’t sleep,” Kyuhyun said almost too casually. I tried too hard on winning against you guys.

                Sungmin looked away from Kyuhyun as they fell into silence both lost in their own thoughts. It was late and the silence was eerie but they seemed comfortable with that. The distance between their chairs were farther than necessary but they’re eyes were glued on the same thing. Through the tiny window at the far end of the room – opposite of the boys – was the wonderful view of the moon. The pain is easing away.

                “You’re rather good at volleyball” Sungmin’s voice suddenly penetrates the silence. Kyuhyun blinked. His body was aching from falling just a little too hard – Kangin was too good at crashing into him – and he ran just a little bit too fast for his untrained feet to manage. He wasn’t good. He wasn’t even close.

                “You were so determined to win. No matter how much Kangin kept crashing into you, you got up and drove the game to victory.” Sungmin continued, his annoyance must have faded with the silence. “I didn’t do anything…” Kyuhyun mumbled causing a chuckle from the other. “I’m pretty sure you’ve never played volleyball before but I’ve never seen anything like this” Sungmin’s words trail off at the end of the sentences but Kyuhyun could hear it despite their distance.

                “Kangin shouldn’t have tried to outplay you. He kept crashing into you. Did he hurt you?” Sungmin stare was intense. “Ahh… I’m fine” not really but it’s not Kangin-hyung’s fault.

                “Sometime’s he’s just too full of himself. And he really shouldn’t…” Sungmin couldn’t finish his sentence when Kyuhyun cut in. “It’s Ok, hyung. I’m fine. It’s not Kangin’s fault.”

                Sungmin blinked at Kyuhyun. “What he does, doesn’t really affect us, right?” Kyuhyun says as though trying to explain himself. But Sungmin smiles wide. “You’re a lot nicer than I thought you were” Now it was Kyuhyun’s turn to blink. Nice? No… Just slightly cunning.

                “Just how nice did you think I was?” Kyuhyun couldn’t help but smile because a warm feeling was growing in him. “Not so nice?”

                Sungmin burst into laughter at Kyuhyun’s comment making his white cheeks slightly red. “I just thought you were a little unfriendly…

                “You don’t smile so much and you don’t talk too much. You always seem angry and sometimes a little scary” Kyuhyun could actually feel Sungmin’s honesty as he said it. But somehow, that honesty was building up warm feelings in his chest. What’s wrong with me? I really do need some sleep.

                Kyuhyun wasn’t supposed to react this way to critics, he was suppose to get anger flare in his heart but now all he had was a awfully warm feeling in his chest that was actually easing the pain in his thighs and his backside. Something is not right.

                “I’m going to bed” Sungmin said yawning at his words.

                “You haven’t seen anything yet” Kyuhyun suddenly says stopping Sungmin dead in his tracks. Sungmin didn’t turn around; he only stood there for a silence then continued his way to bed. Yup, something is definitely wrong.

~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~
So the next morning, Kyuhyun would expect feeling drowsy from the inability of sleep. He limped of bed to hit the showers and realized that Sungmin’s bed was empty. He must have left early in the morning with his friends.
After a quick shower, Kyuhyun didn’t really know what to do, so he took a walk by the beaches – his pace was really slow considering his injured foot - and wondered where everyone was. Did they all leave me behind?
“Kyuhyun!” Kyuhyun turned to see someone who looked a lot like Eunhyuk jumping by the water. He was waving to Kyuhyun. There were other people around him but he couldn’t really recognize them. “Yah, Come play in the water!” Eunhyuk must have shouted so loud that Kyuhyun could hear his every word. Kyuhyun slowly shook his head in disagreement. My feet hurt and you want me to swim?
Eunhyuk frowned and turned around quickly continueing splashing the others who Kyuhyun finally recognize as Kangin, Leeteuk and Donghae. Sungmin isn’t there.
“That’s because I’m here.” Kyuhyun jumped almost a mile. “Don’t jump on people like that!”
Sungmin just laughs. “I’m sorry I didn’t wake you up. You just seem so tired.” Kyuhyun nodded but his eyes had already caught on something else. Sungmin who suddenly realized that Kyuhyun was rather interested in something other than what he was saying, quickly turn around.
Kyuhyun eyes were full of amazement to see a long string attached at different heights of two trees. The stairs leading to the higher string was connected to a tree house. “It’s a flying fox” Sungmin words broke Kyuhyun’s stare. “Want to try it out?”
Kyuhyun blinked at Sungmin feeling completely speechless. “Try that?”
Sungmin nodded, catching Kyuhyun’s arm as he pulled him towards an adventure. Before Kyuhyun knew it, Kyuhyun was already climbing the stairs to the top; already fully geared. “Are you sure this is safe?” Kyuhyun said suddenly realizing just how high up he was but his heart was racing in excitement.
“It’ll be OK,” Sungmin assured. And for some reason, Kyuhyun chose to believe it. Kyuhyun saw how Sungmin simply swung himself off the edge safely without even a hesitation. So, he step to the edge feeling blood pump through his veins as he look down. I should have never agree to this.
And Kyuhyun saw Sungmin waving at him from below. But he wasn’t alone. Kangin, Eunhyuk, Donghae and Leeteuk had joined him. Kyuhyun couldn’t interpret what they were trying to say to him but he was sure he was smiling his brightest smile back at them.
His breathing was uneven from climbing the high stairs and blood was pumping in his veins so loudly he swear he could hear it in his ears but all he could focus on was his heartbeat building almost like a scream in him. There is definitely something wrong with me.
But Kyuhyun had followed his instincts. There was no turning back now, right?
“Sungmin-hyung, THANK YOU!!” Kyuhyun swung himself off, feeling the wind in his hair. And he reached safely all the way down. As soon as he reached the ground, he stared back up at the very spot he had swung himself. Only one second of flying.
It took him a moment later to realize that the others were cheering at him.
“That was amazing!” –Donghae-
“You look so cool!” –Eunhyuk-
“I’m never underestimating you from now on!” –Kangin-
Sungmin only looked at Kyuhyun with a confuse look. Did I do something wrong? Sungmin’s eyes were locked on Kyuhyun and Kyuhyun had not dared make eye contact.
“Kyuhyun, you have to spend more time with us! You were just so cool!” Leeteuk suddenly cheered getting hold of Kyuhyun pulling him into a hug. And Sungmin approached Kyuhyun. “Why did you say thank you?”
Kyuhyun laughed. “For bringing me up the flying fox, of course.” A hint of disappointment flashed through Sungmin’s face. For cheering me on. For forcing me to have such guts. For assuring me it’s going to be OK.
And Leeteuk brought him away saying that he just realized how much Kyuhyun needs to eat – which just made the whole group laugh their socks off. They’re all still very loud.
~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~

I am definitely 100 percent positive that I hate this guy.

But Kyuhyun still preferred sitting next to him during meals. Leeteuk-hyung invited me.

Kyuhyun would gladly say yes to the act of following Sungmin to where he wants to go. Just trying to be polite. He’s my sunbae.

Even if he has to bear with those friends of his – who are just too loud for his liking. Those guys can be funny at times. Just a little loud.

Even if he has less ALONE time he loves so much. Do I have less time alone now?

Even if Sungmin didn’t ask for Kyuhyun’s company, he’ll still be there anyway.  Ok, MAYBE he’s not such a bad guy.

“Kyu, what do you want to do?” Sungmin asked when they just finished lunch. Kyuhyun had spent the yesterday with Sungmin’s friends – he even took it easy when they decided for another round of volleyball – doing what they would normally on The Boy’s Camp. Kyuhyun wouldn’t actually say it out loud but he was enjoying himself. I will never ever be so determined about my feelings anymore.

“What do you like to do?” Sungmin stared at Kyuhyun anticipating an answer. “A video game would be nice.”

“Video game?” Did I just say that out loud? “Yeah, sometimes I get pretty attached to video games.” Kyuhyun smiled at his own statement. He never really says it out loud.

They were alone in their shared room because the others decided to leave for another round of lunch just because they can. Sungmin had refused and Kyuhyun was never really a big eater. So, there they were packing their stuff as it was their last day. Time had passed way too fast and what Kyuhyun first taught as such a long trip turn out to be such a short one. “Maybe we can play together sometime,”

“Sungmin-hyung,” Kyuhyun seem to hang in mid air as he held the other’s gaze. “Let’s be friends,”

Sungmin just stared at Kyuhyun’s hand. Kyuhyun’s kept his smile assuring. And Sungmin smiles back at him. “What are you saying?” Kyuhyun frowns.

“Aren’t we already friends?” and if one day you’re not my friend, I will be ready for that.

Like the ever-flowing river, time passes and it was the last night Kyuhyun was going to share with his new friend. Was it supposed to be sad? Because honestly Kyuhyun didn’t feel anything.

Kyuhyun had went to bed thinking of how tomorrow would happen. Sungmin had went to check on his friends and hasn’t returned. In the darkness, Kyuhyun glanced at Sungmin’s empty bed.

Hyung, it’s late…

Thoughts kept spinning around his head until it became nothingness. Slowly, he drifted to sleep.

“Kyu~” Kyuhyun hears his name called but feels too lazy to open his eyes. “Kyuhyun-ah”

Suddenly, the lights above Kyuhyun flicker on forcing Kyuhyun to awaken from his peaceful slumber. “Hyung?” Sungmin was standing by the switch with a weak smile on his face. “Why’d you turn on the lights?”

Sungmin didn’t answer but instead he turned the lights off again. “It’s OK. Go to sleep Kyuhyun,”

Kyuhyun heard Sungmin move to his bed and Kyuhyun lied back down. “What’s wrong, hyung? Why did you turn off the lights?”

There was a pregnant silence – Kyuhyun almost gave up and resume his slumber – but Sungmin’s voice was soft as he said it. “Do you want to know a secret?”

“What?”

“It’s a secret nobody knows but I’m telling you,” Kyuhyun remained silent for awhile.

“I’ve got good ears I can listen” Kyuhyun said honestly.  But instead of answering Kyuhyun’s question Sungmin got up from his bed and approached the younger’s. Kyuhyun got up, moving to give some space for Sungmin to sit on his bed.

“I’m afraid of the dark. I have always been afraid of it”
