Chapter 5 Part B

Yes, I was right. My feet are going to hurt. Dammit, I hate it that I’m always right.

Yeah, right…

And Kyuhyun ambles his way out of the classroom as the bell rings for break. Dammit, he didn’t say where to meet. But Kyuhyun just walks along the hallway hoping for a miracle that Sungmin would look for Kyuhyun at the canteen.

“Kyu~” Kyuhyun turns. I haven’t reached the canteen yet.

Sungmin glowers at Kyuhyun taking the edge of Kyuhyun’s sleeve and dragging him at the opposite direction of everyone else. “Hyung, where are we going?” Kyuhyun manages to say without wincing at his pained feet – Sungmin was rather strong despite his small figure.

“I want to show you something.” Sungmin was eager and it really showed because he didn’t care that he was pulling the dongsaeng into everybody and he didn’t care that a lot of people were throwing weird glances at them.

Sungmin finally stops after pulling Kyuhyun up the stairs – may I say a few fleets of stairs that Kyuhyun was glad he didn’t sprain his ankle on the way – to the very end of the hallway to a very not kept room. “Hyung, Where are we?” Kyuhyun feels ridiculous at the very moment he lets the word slip his mouth. He has been practically living in the school for years and he asked the question as though he was from Mars; no, it was more like from Pluto.

“You’ve never been here?” Sungmin says it as he pushes the door open with a loud creak and grabs Kyuhyun’s wrist, pulling him in the room. “This is the old music room. Since the new Music room open up a few years back, nobody uses this room anymore.”

“Then, what are we doing here?” Kyuhyun watched the spiders creep back to their webs on the ceiling and his eyes fall on the old piano pushed to the corner of the room. Kyuhyun continues to scan the room. On the table, music sheets were scattered and there was a very old and dusty couch pushed to the wall of the middle. Besides that, the room was empty, infested with mysterious creepy crawlies but all and all empty.

“I want to hear you sing.” Kyuhyun’s turns a slightly shocked face to Sungmin. Was this boy sane?

“Hyung, I don’t sing.” Kyuhyun laughs as he says it but knows that it was a lie. Kyuhyun loved singing but only when he was singing to himself, in the showers, or when he takes strolls in the city a lone, by the small stream of his small town but not in front of anybody else. “And why me?” It was actually killing Kyuhyun that Sungmin had particularly picked him to do this kind of activity but he didn’t imagine it like this.

Sungmin had dust of the thick layer of dust laying on the rusty piano by the corner and slowly took a seat. He set his hands on standby on the keys but just when it seemed he was going to play he turned to Kyuhyun. “If you sing for me one song, I’ll show you a piece I written.”

Kyuhyun bit his lip. How that hell did he know that my curiosity kills me? He’s taking advantage of me! Sungmin pats the empty space by his side and like under a spell Kyuhyun takes a seat. Sungmin starts’ playing a melody Kyuhyun was sure he only hears his mother sing in the night when he has nightmares as a small boy. Kyuhyun glances nervously at Sungmin as Sungmin plays it perfectly and it wills Kyuhyun song out of his mouth. Bottom of Form

Goodnight my angel, time to close your eyes,

Kyuhyun didn’t know why Sungmin was playing this song.

And save these questions for another day.

I think I know what you've been asking me,

I think you know what I've been trying to say.

I promised I would never leave you,

This was only meant for his nightmares when he would dream of his parents.

And you should always know

Wherever you may go, no matter where you are

I never will be far away.

When he would think of how long he hadn’t seen them.

Goodnight my angel, now it's time to sleep,

And still so many things I want to say.

Remember all the songs you sang for me,

When he would think of the times he didn’t live so far away from home.

When we went sailing on an emerald bay

And like a boat out on the ocean,

When he wished his parents would forget work and look for him in school…

Kyuhyun tops singing though Sungmin was playing perfectly well. He just couldn’t continue.

“Kyu” Sungmin says slowly as he realizes that something was wrong. “Is there something wrong?” Kyuhyun shakes his head. “Of course not, you’re playing is just too perfect” Kyuhyun fakes a smile but he wasn’t lying Sungmin played perfectly fine it was just Kyuhyun.

“I knew you could sing,” Sungmin gets up and quickly looks through the scattered music sheets on the table. Kyuhyun was just too mortified to say anything. Sungmin sets him once again, placing new music sheets on the piano. “I never showed this to anyone so listen well.

It takes Kyuhyun awhile to realize that Sungmin had started playing a perfect melody. The song expressed a rather slow beat that had a nostalgic feeling to it that made Kyuhyun felt lost of words. If the song had words to it, Kyuhyun knew that it would be sad one.

Kyuhyun was so wrapped up in the song that Kyuhyun had forgotten the previous pain he endured. How could this boy give so much emotion by just playing a piano? But then the bell rings making Sungmin stop the song abruptly.

“Times up” Sungmin grabs Kyuhyun by the arm ready to sprint back to class but Kyuhyun holds Sungmin from running for his life. It made Sungmin fall back on the seat with a shocked expression on his face. “We have to go before we get late,” Sungmin once again stands up but Kyuhyun kept his intense glare at Sungmin.

“C’mon Kyu~” Sungmin pulls Kyuhyun but he simply wouldn’t budge. “We’ll get in trouble”

“If we sit here to the rest of the class no one will find us, right?” Kyuhyun had said it. He just didn’t want to leave yet. He didn’t want Sungmin to stop playing the piano. He just wanted Sungmin to sit there and play for him. A disapproving look flashes pass Sungmin’s face but Kyuhyun pretends not to see it.

“Just for today, hyung. Spend time with me” And Kyuhyun does it. He says the things he won’t normally say and he bites his tongue for letting it out his mouth without really thinking.

But Sungmin smiles at him and Kyuhyun forgets the war happening in his head.

“OK, for today…” Kyuhyun smiles bitterly at the statement but he leads the way back to the piano as Sungmin follows him because even if Sungmin was his friend he couldn’t expect more from the other. Not now that they live in totally fragile lives apart from each other.

“When we live such fragile lives, it’s best way we survive.” All American rejects

Time was seeping by them as they got to know each other a little better. So, Sungmin was an only child and his parents shower him with whatever he wants. Sungmin like martial arts because it makes him feel a bit stronger than the other people around him think he is. He loves music and there’s not a day he can live without it. Kyuhyun was so wrapped up in Sungmin’s expression as he told his stories that he didn’t even mind not saying anything. Besides, there was nothing out of ordinary in Kyuhyun’s life anyway.

They had moved to the rusty couch at the corner of the room to get more comfy when they decided if they started playing the piano, the song would just bring people towards them.

“Kyu,” Sungmin suddenly says breaking a small silence they had grown accustomed to.

“Mmm..” Kyuhyun hadn’t bothered to turn to the other.

“Do you think life would be this happy when we grow up?”

A low chuckle escapes Kyuhyun. “You’re asking me like I’m older than you” Kyuhyun smiles so sincerely he could actually feel something he had not felt in a long time; happiness.

“I don’t know but I think I could handle miserable” Kyuhyun doesn’t look at Sungmin as he says it but he feels Sungmin’s eyes looking straight at him. He didn’t really mind.

Sungmin opens his mouth like he was about to say something but then the bell rings indicating that school was over. Sungmin closes his mouth and Kyuhyun stands up ready to leave. Sungmin slowly follows after him, his expression full of question but Kyuhyun knew what he was going to say and Kyuhyun had no power to answer it. You’re just not ready to know me, Sungmin.
